Medicare

What Is Medicare?

In short, Medicare is health insurance coverage for individuals aged 65 or older with a few exceptions for younger people to include those with disabilities and anyone with permanent kidney failure. Medicare helps cover the cost of healthcare, but it does not cover every single expense like the cost of care at a nursing facility or hospice care.

Medicare Parts

Medicare consists of four parts:

  • Part A: Helps the insured pay for inpatient stays at a hospital and select limited time spent in hospice care or a nursing facility. You can think of Part A as hospital insurance.
  • Part B: Think of this as medical insurance that can help you pay for services from healthcare providers, medical equipment, home healthcare, and more. Keep in mind that there is a premium associated with selecting Medicare Part B so you have the option of electing not to have it if the cost is prohibitive or the coverage is not needed.
  • Part C: Known as Medicare Advantage Plan this is offered by a private insurance company and includes Parts A and B together in one plan. If you are in the North or South Carolina areas, Tarlton Insurance is happy to schedule a consultation with you to determine what type of Medicare coverage is right for you.
  • Part D: Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs.
